Pink Tourmaline: The Meaning and Healing Properties of the October birthstone

September 20, 2018

Pink Tourmaline is the birthstone for October and is used to symbolize the 8th wedding anniversary.

Tourmaline is available in a many colors from black to bluish-black, dark brown, yellow, medium brown, blue to neon blue (you've heard of paraiba, right?), lime to dark forest green, red and reddish purple, yellow, pink, and even colorless. The most expensive tourmalines are the blue indicolite, green verdelite and pink rubellite.

Tourmaline is believed to strengthen the body and spirit, especially the nervous system, blood, and lymphatic system. It's also said to inspire creativity and was used extensively as a talisman by artists and writers. Blue tourmaline is one of my favorite gemstones and it totally makes sense!

Tourmaline is also connected to the root, or base chakra. If you've been reading along for the last couple of months, you will know all about chakras (energy pathways in your body), but if you need a refresher, please visit our blog post to learn about them.

The Base, or Root Chakra, is located at the base of the spine and controls the energy for muscle sensations and movement. It is the foundation of your physical and spiritual energy. When your Root chakra is physically out of balance you will feel lethargic, have low levels of activity, lowered enthusiasm/joy, and a need for constant stimulation. Sounds like a case of the Mondays, right? But it's more than that.

When your Root chakra is out of balance, you will feel flighty, disconnected from reality, and distant. If this sounds familiar to you, read on...

When the Root Chakra is in balance, you'll regain your physical strength and stamina. Your spiritual energy will start to flow and you feel more secure and sense of your own power. It often leads to independence and spontaneous leadership. YES!

Red toned gems are helpful in restoring balance to the Root Chakra. You can enhance the benefits of the gemstones by combining them with yoga positions focused on the lower back. I also recommend doing activities that connect you with nature like hiking, gardening, rock or shell collecting, and physical outdoor games. Anything that will ground you to the earth.
