Creating a Custom Jewelry Design

Posted on June 18 2020

I love working closely with clients to create custom jewelry designs. It's a great way to collaborate so we can make your dream jewelry designs come to life.

There are a number of ways that we can work together.

Semi-Custom Work

If you like a design of mine, but would like a different metal, or a different stone, or even small adjustments, just get in touch and I can price up different combinations for you.

Design Sketches

I can create designs for you and you can take those designs and get them made by a jeweler that you already have a relationship with. Typically I charge $150 for this service. If you use me to create the piece of jewelry, then I apply that charge to the finished piece.

I will create 2-3 sketches for you based on our emails of what you're looking for. I want this to be a collaboration between us so that you have exactly what you are dreaming of.

You can have 3 revisions of the sketch before we go forward (although I typically get it right with the first group of sketches). This can take 1-2 weeks depending on how quickly we hone in on the perfect design.

I love creating the finished piece from our sketch. I create a jewelry model and molds, get the casting made in the metal of your choice and then set stones, polish and finish it up.

The entire process takes about 2-3 months and the results speak for themselves.

This custom engagement ring and wedding band was carved in wax to her specifications, cast into palladium and hand engraved. We used moissanites in the top and side to keep it all ethical and eco friendly. :-)

Custom Compass Necklace

Below I have used a customer's stone (a beautiful green lagoon/seafoam tourmaline), in my pirouette setting.

Your Jewelry

Maybe you have a ring or necklace that you love, but you want to re-work it into something new. I work on a piece by piece basis since I might not always be able to remove the stone and keep the setting intact.

I can send your settings to my refiner to use as a metal credit towards your ring, or I can return the setting to you, whatever you like. If you choose to get the credit I will apply it towards your finished piece that we design together (see above). Note: I can't use the same metal in your new piece.

Your Stones or Mine (get it)?

If you have loose stones that you want to use in one of my designs, so long as the stone is the same size that I use in the design that you like, I can set your stone into my design. You get to choose which metal you would like to use (this blog post has more information on how to choose your metal).

Your options are:

Sterling Silver, 14k Yellow Gold, 14k Rose Gold, 14k Palladium White Gold, Palladium, Platinum

I have a whole selection of stones in my safe that are just waiting to be set into jewelry. Please get in touch with me if you'd like to see a selection of stones that I have, based on color, size or shape that you're interested in.

Here is an example of a pair of earrings that I designed using the customers diamonds from a ring that she inherited. I added two Canadian diamonds to compliment the shapes of her diamonds and we created these stunning gold and diamond ear climbers:

As always those, it's best to have a budget in mind. Things that affect the price are complexity of the design, how much labor to create the model, molds and finished piece and of course the weight and type of metal you choose.

Next Steps

I work up pricing for your dream ring and create a custom listing for you to add to your cart and check out.

Once we've agreed on the design, I require a 50% deposit before I start production of the jewelry, then the final balance once it's complete and ready to ship.

Final payment is due once the piece of jewelry is ready and as soon as that has been received we ship you your new custom designed piece of jewelry!

If you are shipping your jewelry to me, I will send you details of the best address and shipping method to use once we start working together.
