How to Get Rid of Wedding Ring Rash

Posted on March 05 2020

Believe it or not, wedding ring rash is a thing (though that's probably not the medical term for it!), it's a rash that is on your ring finger, underneath the ring and is fairly common. But I have some tips for how to get rid of the rash.

People with eczema, allergies and dermatitis are more prone to it than others. But there are a number of causes for it happening and thankfully there are a few remedies too.

POTENTIAL CAUSES OF RING RASH

The main cause is an allergic reaction to nickel that can be found in some metals, namely white gold and yellow gold (it is added to strengthen the metal). Luckily for you, the metals I use do not have nickel in them. You can read more about the metals I use here. The white gold I use is a mix of white gold and palladium (instead of nickel).

Other reasons for an allergic reaction is trapped lotions, creams, soap and even water between your finger and ring. They can build up quickly when you wear your ring to wash dishes, shower, etc. and can cause your skin to dry out.

HOW TO STOP RING RASH

The best thing is to take off your ring every time you wash your hands and make sure that your finger is dry before putting the ring back on. Also, the soap buildup will get under the stone (if your ring has one) and can cause the gemstone to look murky or cloudy. If this happens, please get in touch with me. I can steam clean it at a minimal cost, or you can always purchase one of my cleaning kits with a cleaning stick to get into those hard to reach areas behind the stone.

ADDITIONAL TIPS TO SOOTHE RING RASH

-You may want to put your ring on another finger while waiting for the rash to go away and you may want to apply topical neosporin to the area.

-If you haven't purchased your ring yet and think you might get an allergic reaction, then you might want to consider getting the ring made in palladium or platinum which shouldn't give you any allergic reactions. Just message us for pricing.

JEWELRY CARE IN GENERAL

Also, you should know that there are a few things that you shouldn't do with your wedding ring on. These things might not affect your fingers, but they aren't good for the ring!

Water activities: you shouldn't wear your ring in the pool, or at the beach. You can wear it in the shower, but be aware that some of the soap may get into the hard to reach areas and this may then cause rash issues (see above).

Gardening: again, the dirt may get into the hard to reach areas and will result in you needing to clean it (I have a cleaning kit with a cleaning stick to get into those hard to reach areas)

Cleaning with chemicals: this is a no-no - especially if you have gemstone jewelry. The harsh chemicals may affect the stone. Always wear gloves, or take the ring off!

Lotions, creams and sunscreen: aside from the build up that you will get (like the soap in the shower), sunscreen in particular can tarnish sterling silver jewelry.

As always, if you have any questions you can email us!
